Local Housing Allowance

The recently introduced Local Housing Allowance (LHA) will replace the Housing Benefit system for private renting. Rent levels for the private rented sector are set at a level that is meant to enable you to cover the rent of suitable accommodation.

If the rent of the property is less than the LHA figure, you can keep up to £15 of the difference. If the rent is more than the LHA figure, you will have to make up the shortfall.

Even if you can afford to make up the shortfall, you will need to carefully consider whether you have enough money left over for your other costs.

You may also be entitled to tax credits. 9 out of 10 families are entitled to child tax credit, which you may be entitled to if you are responsible for one or more children. If you work, but have a low income, you may be entitled to working tax credit.
